travel

The world has been in a period of restriction and caution. Different approaches have been adopted in the two years since the emergence of the virus, with no quick solutions. Its persistence has been disruptive and its end is everyone’s wish. This uncertainty is something that I have to consider living around it.

I am grateful that I did a trip back in March of 2020, to Bangkok. The atmosphere was already tensed and tourists were few in Bangkok. It did not feel right without the hustle and bustle of people expected in Bangkok. During the trip, unprecedented travel rules in different countries came into force. Uncertainty grew. I made it back days before Singapore imposed travel restrictions and quarantine requirements. More thankfully, I am well.

This was the time of the year when I have the time for a break. To make it a really good break, it will usually consists of an overseas trip. There had been plans, or at least some destinations to consider, but those were dropped. Those plans are still on hold, but I decided to do something about it. Towards the last few days at work, I finally made up my mind to take the first step out. It was quick, I requested for permission and once it was given in-principle, the air tickets were booked. I had been contemplating to travel for a while. It was not easy to travel, but once my considerations were factored in, the planning was smooth. I had to narrow my options to developed cities that were small and easy to get around. The choices were mainly European cities and I decided on Amsterdam, Netherlands. It would be a solo trip and the run up to the flight was just a week.

I had to keep my trip simple, there were too many changes in travel requirements with the emergence of the new variant. There was the fear of contracting the virus, but if all medical advice and measures are taken into account, the risk can be minimised. I believe and trust in a balance of going on with life and medically doing whatever is necessary. Much effort was put into understanding the travel requirements and restrictions, planning how to go about the test and learning where to get information from. Travelling in this period has its added stress, but it is worth it.

I was also glad to see friends making the same move to travel and enjoy themselves. I could sense their relief and the comfort from those trips, however risky it was. The freedom that was once taken for granted has become much valued. The thrill of seeing a new land or experiencing a new weather became more desired. The joy of travelling and learning to explore a new place is rewarding.
